El Kayt employment program Is an initiative by the Community Development Authority in Dubai for the employment of people with disabilities, through empowering and integrating them within a society that respects everyone and believes that people with disabilities are entitled to the same rights and privileges that other citizens enjoy.
What is El Kayt? It’s the local name of a small boat attached to the ship, it’s like a lifeboat, and is always ready to act, the shipmaster usually uses it to move from the ship to the port. Why did we name our program El Kayt? Although the boat is small and calm, its existence is really important if empowered and used, because it is a life saver for sailors, and it’s a tool that the shipmaster relies on, as is a person with disability, who has potential that might lead him to be an effective person in society and who is capable of giving and creating ,if empowered and given the opportunities in a society that values diversity and difference. The objective of the program In November 2006, the UAE Federal Government passed the UAE Disability Act (Federal Law No.29/2006) to protect the rights of people with disabilities and special needs. This Law stipulates that The UAE national person with special needs enjoys the right to work and occupy the public positions, for which the special needs , in themselves , do not constitute an obstacle hindering from applying and being selected for jobs. The law was amended in December 2009 to protect rights of people with disabilities rather than persons of special needs, hereby insuring the rights of this particular segment of society. The UAE ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on the 19th of March 2010. Elkayt employment program aims at providing People with disabilities the same rights and benefits as other citizens, empowering this group of people to engage in productive employment which is appropriate for their academic qualifications and their physical capabilities in leading institutions in the public and private sectors, and to provide appropriate training to enhance their personal skills and raise awareness about disability and related topics within the community as well as support the efforts of the United Arab Emirates in general and Dubai in particular in this area. Despite their high productivity and outstanding performance in the governmental and private entities, there is still a social stigma associated with their employment and empowerment in society. For Job seekers:
Assessment of PWD for employment Professional assessments will be conducted for candidates to identify their abilities and capabilities, existing skills, and if there are any challenges they might face during employment. Recommendations will be made based on the assessment and individual profiles will be created to assist when finding suitable job vacancies. Assistance with interviews and CV writing Our team will assist the candidate in creating a CV that contains information on their abilities and disabilities and the types of support they will require. The team will coordinate for interviews, arrange for any assistance needed (i.e. sign language interpreter) and give support and counseling to the candidate if required. Employment Mentorship Any candidate within the project who gets employed by one of our partnered employers will get to have a mentor assigned by his employer. Our team will follow up with the mentor on the candidate’s progress and will observe his improvement during the first 6 months of the mentorship. Employment training If the candidate (after assessment ) requires training before joining employment, our team will arrange for professional training such as computer skills, English and occupational requirements. Individualized training can also be arranged for certain types of disabilities ( hearing and visual impairments) Job Counseling Our team can offer professional job counseling to the candidates before and after joining the employment to ensure sustainability and productivity.
For Employers:
Checking Accessibility Our team can conduct accessibility checking for the job environment upon the employers request and before any of our candidates join the employment. A comprehensive recommendation –based report will be offered to the employer. General Disability Awareness Our team offers free extensive awareness session on general disabilities and special needs to all our partners before employing a person with disability and upon request. Tailor made training -Mentorship training : Our team can provide specific training to the mentor advising him/her on best ways to fulfill candidate’s potential and accommodate his or her needs in addition to fulfilling the employer’s expectation. -Group training: Our team can provide specific training upon employers’ request to train colleagues who will be working with the candidate on the best ways to deal with PWD or a certain disability in order to meet everyone’s expectations.
